Small Claims Mediation Program
- The Small Claims Mediation Program provides mediation to parties filing claims in the Court's Small Claims and Conciliation Branch. These cases involve monetary compensation claims of $10,000 or less. Small claims cases typically involve complaints related to consumer/service providers, disputes between landlords and tenants, roommates, neighbors and much more. Certain civil matters involving claims up to $25,000 may also be mediated in the Small Claims Mediation Program.
- A Superior Court magistrate judge oversees all Small Claims matters. Participation in mediation is required by the court, however reaching an agreement is voluntary. Although most small claims litigants are not represented by an attorney, it is a legal requirement for corporations. Mediators assist the parties in reaching mutually acceptable agreements. Small claims mediations are held Monday through Friday beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m. Mediation sessions usually last 1 to 2 hours.
