WHAT: White House Forum on Increasing Access to Justice
WHERE: Live-stream: https://www.whitehouse.gov/live
WHEN: Tuesday, April 19, 2016 – 1pm to 4:15pm
WHO: Chief Judge Eric T. Washington, DC Court of Appeals
On April 19, 2016, the White House will host and live-stream an event focusing on a range of issues relating to Access to Justice. Chief Judge Washington will participate in a panel discussion along with five of his state supreme court colleagues. Other program participants include corporate CEOs, legal aid program leaders, and the Dean of Harvard Law School. The forum will include remarks from US Attorney General Loretta Lynch; Neil Eggleston, White House Counsel; Legal Services Corporation Chair John Levi; Acting Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy; and ABA President Paulette Brown. The event will conclude with a reception at the US Supreme Court, at which Justice Kennedy will speak.
“This is an extremely important topic given the growing perception that the legal system’s reliance on money is having a disparate impact on the fair administration of justice in both the civil and criminal cases filed in our state courts. Therefore, these concerns must be addressed in a way that enhances the public’s trust and confidence that a state court can fairly and effectively meet its constitutional obligations while preserving and protecting the rule of law,” said Chief Judge Washington.
