In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s Gideon vs. Wainwright decision, the 2013 DC Judicial and Bar Conference will explore the impact of the decision that recognized a right to counsel for indigent defendants. Keynote speaker Stephen B. Bright, President of the Southern Center for Human Rights and lecturer at Yale Law School, will speak on the topic “Redeeming Gideon: Access to Counsel 50 Years Later.” The one-day conference will feature seminars and forums coinciding with the theme. In addition, sessions to assist attorneys throughout their career, including the DC Courts judicial application and nomination process, featuring Christopher Kang, Special Counsel to the President and members of the DC Judicial Nomination Commission.
