Superior Court Names Long-time DC Resident and Probate Attorney to head its Probate Division
WASHINGTON, DC – Chief Judge Rufus G. King III announced the appointment of Anne Meister as Register of Wills for the District of Columbia. Ms. Meister will head the Probate Division of Superior Court, responsible for guardianships, interventions, conservatorships and all other probate matters.
Ms. Meister spent the past ten years as a solo practitioner with a general civil practice focused on probate law and the six years before that with the firm of Helm & Meister. She served as Chief of Staff and later as Legislative Counsel to DC Council Chair Dave Clarke. She began her career with the DC Council as a Staff Attorney for the Judiciary Committee, focusing on mental health issues and probate reform.
“Ms. Meister has a wealth of experience in probate practice and probate law in the District of Columbia which will be of great value to the Probate Division, the bar and the public,” said Chief Judge King. “She is a member of the Court’s Probate Education Committee and has demonstrated not only an extensive knowledge of this area of the law, but also an ability to work well as part of a team. Her leadership ability was clear to us and we are pleased that we were able to find someone of Ms. Meister’s caliber to take on such an important role.”
The Probate Division is responsible for overseeing the probate of wills, the administration of decedents' estates. The Division also appoints and monitors guardians, in which attorneys ensure the well-being of persons not able to care for themselves and conservators, in which attorneys are appointed as fiduciary agents to look after the finances of persons unable to manage them on their own.
Ms. Meister received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Delaware, a Juris Doctor degree from the Antioch School of Law, and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. She is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia and the State of Maryland.
