You might know him as the Honorable DC Superior Court Judge A. Burgess Jr., or "Your Honor," or that guy who once shot down your summary judgment, but to the students at Academy of Hope he's just "Frank." A volunteer assistant teacher at the adult learning center, Burgess is known among students and staff for his lectures on the Constitution and sharing his vacation photos.

"He also answers our phones," says Mary Cabriele, a volunteer coordinator at Academy of Hope. "He even does data entry. He does anything we ask him."

Burgess, who took senior status in 2013 after 30 years on the bench, has been teaching at Academy of Hope since 2014 at the encouragement of his wife, Diana Martin, a former volunteer reading teacher there.
